Al-Bukhaari (548) and Muslim (1371) narrated that Ibn Umar said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “When the top edge of the sun has risen, then delay praying until it has risen above the horizon, and when the lower part of the sun has set, delay praying until it has fully set.”

Muslim (1373) narrated that Uqbah ibn Aamir al-Juhani said: “There are three times at which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade us to pray or bury our dead: when the sun has clearly started to rise until it is fully risen, when it is directly overhead at midday until it has passed its zenith, and when the sun starts to set until it has fully set.”

In this regard, scholars have agreed that there are three times during the day when we are forbidden to offer any prayers, including make up prayers. These times are: when the sun rises up until it is above the horizon by the length of a spear (~11 minutes), when the sun reaches its zenith and crosses over (~6 minutes) and when the bottom of the sun’s disc touches the horizon until it sets (~6 minutes). During these times, no obligatory (farz)*, essential (sunnah), optional (nafal) and missed (qaza) prayers, and no prostration (Sajda-e-Tilaawat and Sajda-e-Sahv) are permitted.

* Some scholars are of the opinion that farz (obligatory) prayers and 2-rakah after tawaaf are excluded from this restriction. Wallahu A’alum.
